Britain's Queen Elizabeth steps onto the pitch of Ireland's Croke Park stadium, the scene of the Bloody Sunday massacre by British troops in 1920. A very different scene now During Ireland's war for independence, British troops opened fire on the crowd in the stadium in retaliation for the killing of British intelligence officers the night before. On Queen Elizabeth's four-day trip to Ireland she has shown a determination to address the bloody past and offer reconciliation. She watches Irish dancing. And later Gaelic Athletic Association Chairman Christy Cooney welcomes the Queen. SOUNDBITE: Gaelic Athletic Association Chairman Christy Cooney, saying (English): "We all know that in our shared history there has been many tragic events which have inflicted hurt on us all. While acknowledging the significance of the past and honoring all of those who have lost their lives, including those that died in this place the Gaelic Athletic Association has consistently supported and helped advance the peace process in Northern Ireland. In particular we have encouraged the reconciliation and mutual understanding which has so successfully flowed from the Good Friday agreement and its endorsement in referenda by the people of Ireland, north and south. Your Majesty's state visit at the invitation of Uachtarán na hÉireann (Irish President) will result in a further important underpinning and advancement of this process which I firmly believe is irreversible." Not everyone welcomes the royal visit. Demonstrators were back on the streets -- clashing with riot police in Dublin. Security around the Queen is tight. There have been no public walkabouts and streets around venues have been cleared of onlookers. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters
