No signs of relief in Syria. Amateur video purportedly shot in Aleppo shows students chanting for the end of the regime. Security forces are seen entering a building. On Monday Syrian President Bashar al-Assad broke a two month silence to tackle the wave of protests against his rule. His promises of reforms have been met with skepticism on the street. Some forces appear to use batons to break up the demonstrations. Footage out of Homs, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, shows more demonstrations. In Deraa, demonstrators march against pro Assad rallies. They say they would prefer death to humiliation. Nighttime footage shows more demonstrations. Rights groups say 1,300 civilians have been killed in the crackdown in Syria. Syria has barred most international journalists from the country, making it difficult to verify accounts from activists and officials. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters.
