Rights activists say at least 80 civilians were killed during a tank-backed assault, in one of the bloodiest days of the five-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. Sunday's attack came on the eve of Ramadan, a holy month when Muslims fast during daylight hours. Hama was the scene of a 1982 massacre in which thousands of people were killed when Assad's father crushed a revolt by the Muslim Brotherhood. Other amateur video footage posted on the Internet claims to show demonstrations taking place elsewhere in support of Hama, here in the capital Damascus, and in the city of Homs. The Muslim Brotherhood has accused the Alawite ruling elite of waging sectarian warfare on Sunni Muslims by attacking Hama. Nick Rowlands, Reuters.
