Amateur video out of Syria shows tanks on the streets of Hama. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes amid reports that at least four civilians were killed Monday as President Bashar al-Assad's government cracks down on anti-government protests. Some 84 civilians have purportedly been killed in in Hama -- the same city where Assad's father crushed an armed Muslim Brotherhood revolt 29 years ago ... killing thousands of people. In Brussels, European Union foreign policy spokesman Michael Mann expressed outrage. SOUNDBITE: European Union foreign policy spokesman Michael Mann, saying (EngNorwegian): ''We were extremely shocked and appalled by what happened in Hama yesterday. There has never been any justification for what has been going on. You cannot justify attacking civilians who are exercising their right to democratic protest. You just can't send in the tanks and attack them like that. We have condemned it in the strongest possible terms. The EU is planning more sanctions -- in the form of asset freezes and travel bans. This as the latest violence coincides with the start of the Muslim Ramadan fast Syrian authorities have expelled most independent journalists since March, making it hard to verify activists' reports or official statements.
