ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Thousands of student protesters clashed with riot police on Tuesday (August 9) in the Chilean capital, Santiago, as protests continued over President Sebastian Pinera's education policies. Students fought pitched battles with police who fired water cannon and tear gas. Headed by students demanding better, cheaper state education, hundreds of thousands of people have protested in Santiago and Chile's other main cities in recent weeks in some of the biggest demonstrations since the dying stages of Augusto Pinochet's 1973-1990 dictatorship. Pinera, a center-right billionaire who took power a year and a half ago has been buffeted by at times violent protests over his education, environmental and mining policies. Pinera took power last year ending 20 years of center-left rule in Chile, pushing a raft of labor, health, energy, electoral and environmental reforms, but had to reboot his agenda to focus on reconstruction after a massive earthquake.
