Rebel forces converge on the last stronghold of Muammar Gaddafi for the final showdown of Libya's brief but bloody war. The rebels are gathering near Sirte for a battle expected to be the fiercest of all. They say at least 50, 000 Gaddafi supporters are hiding in the fallen leader's ancestral homeland. A rebel ultimatum to surrender or die has so far failed to convince them to give up. The ultimatum was issued on Tuesday. It expires after this week's Eid holiday. There's still no sign of Gaddafi and mystery still surrounds the fate of his most reviled son Khamis. This is what's left of a military base close to the Brigade 32 compound Khamis commanded. It's been wrecked by NATO airstrikes. The site is open to anyone who cares to take a look around. It's not clear if the weapons held at the base were also destroyed or simply carried away. Reports that Khamis is dead have not been independently confirmed. He's Gaddafi's youngest son and has been accused of executing political detainees during his father's rule. Gaddafi's wife and three of his children have fled to Algeria. Paul Chapman, Reuters
