Electronic Arts scores again with FIFA 12. The company says early data points to a record-shattering launch for a sports videogame. It sold an estimated 3.2 million copies globally in under a week - that's a 23 percent increase on FIFA 11. The videogame market has evolved dramatically in recent years, with the rise of social games played via Facebook. Andrew Wilson is the new head of EA Sports. SOUNDBITE: Andrew Wilson, EA Sports Executive Vice President saying (English) "The big franchises, the blockbusters are the ones that are doing the best and they're growing dramatically across all platforms so while we've had a tremendous time with FIFA over the last week, the biggest sports game ever launched, ever, and the biggest launch of any video game this year, you know we also see other brands like the Sims Social rocketing to number two on Facebook in the course of a month." FIFA 12 has won plaudits for its game play which has seen some tweaks since FIFA's last outing. SOUNDBITE: Andrew Wilson, EA Sports Executive Vice President saying (English) "The important thing for us is that we put the control in the hands of the gamer. So for those who want to really tie to what goes on in the real world, we allow that. For those who want to do everything they possibly can to disconnect from the reality of the real world and play in a world where their team can actually have a shot then we'll give them that opportunity as well." The online experience, where gamers can play head to head over the internet continues to be a big driver. EA reports that October first was the busiest day for online gaming in the history of EA Sports. Matt Cowan, Reuters
