French President Nicolas Sarkozy has congratulated the team behind his country's Oscar winning movie The Artist. The silent movie is the talk of tinsletown after bagging five Academy Awards on Sunday. Speaking just hours after the film industry's biggest night, President Sarkozy had this to say: (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT NICOLAS SARKOZY SAYING: "It's a great success for French cinema and for quality cinema. Because The Artist is not simply silent it's also in black and white and if this could give the idea to the youth who have liked this film, they would be persuaded to watch Capra (American director), to watch Lubitsch (American director), to watch Italian cinema, all the black and white films." The black and white French film collected Oscars for musical score and costume design as well as for its director Michel Hazanavicius and star Jean Dujardin (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT NICOLAS SARKOZY SAYING: "Jean Dujardin, an immense actor, and he is fantastic because we understand his English very well (laughs). To congratulate him seriously would be to say one really feels like speaking English with him because one understands absolutely everything when he speaks. The effort that he is making is exceptional and it should re-inforce in us the idea to defend creation, to defend film-makers.'' Movie go-ers on Monday morning complimented the success of the film. (SOUNDBITE) (French) MOVIE-GOER SAYING: "Especially that it (the film The Artist) was a fluke, I think when they started, they really had no idea that it would work with the public, and that it would win all the awards. So good for them.'' As well as ruling at the Oscars, The Artist has also stolen the spotlight at the French Cesars and British BAFTAs. Sarah Mills, Reuters.
