French expatriates cast their ballots on Sunday morning (April 22) at the embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam, for the first round of the presidential election. Around 6,000 French nationals are living in the former colony. Incumbent president Nicolas Sarkozy and his Socialist rival Francois Hollande are pegged to beat eight other candidates to go through to a May 6 run-off, where polls give Hollande a double-digit lead. Hanoi, the capital of French Indochina, carries heavy traces of its colonial heritage. The first French troopers landed in Vietnam in 1858 and the last of them left almost a hundred years later, a result of their defeat at the infamous battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
