Syrian National Council Chairman Abdelbasset Seyda makes a harrowing cry for help at the Paris "Friends of Syria" conference. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SYRIAN NATIONAL COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, ABDELBASSET SEYDA, SAYING: "Dear friends. Syria is suffering. Syria is a victim. It needs humanitarian aid. The international community must force the regime to open humanitarian corridors so that this aid can arrive." Reports of the defection of a general who is a personal friend of Bashar al-Assad is providing a hopeful backdrop for the meeting. Some believe that it is a sign that the Assad regime is crumbling. French president Francios Hollande said that Assad's fall is inevitable - and called upon leaders to push for UN action. Firm action by the U.N. Security Council has been thus far vetoed by Russia and China. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE, HILLARY CLINTON, SAYING: "Now what can every group and nation represented here do? I ask you to reach out to Russia and China and not only urge but demand that they get off the sidelines and begin to support the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people." It is not clear whether Russia and China would agree to put more pressure on Assad in a new Security Council resolution. Sarah Sheffer, Reuters
