Today's daily digit: 1 billion plus. Take a good look at your iPhone, Samsung, Blackberry, or whatever smartphone you carry in your pocket, and imagine one billion people around the world using such a device. The number of smartphones in use globally surpassed the one billion-unit mark for the first time ever during the third quarter of 2012, and it will take less than three years from now to add another billion, according to research from Strategy Analytics. As the report points out: The Nokia Communicator, the first smartphone, arrived in the mid-1990s, but the smartphone as we know it didn't hit mass appeal until the first iPhone showed up in 2007. Strategy Analytics says that even though today's one billion is impressive, most of the world does not yet own a smartphone, so there is lots of room for growth, particularly in emerging markets such as China, India and Africa.
