Colombia's flower industry ready for biggest selling day

Colombia's flower industry is in full bloom over Valentine's Day when they export hundreds of millions of flowers around the world. Elly Park reports.

If you are planning on sending flowers to your love interest this Valentine's Day, the chances are that they come a from a place like this - a flower plantation outside the Colombian capital of Bogota. The South American country is the world's second biggest flower exporter, and the main producer of cut flowers for the United States. Alvaro Camacho is Manager of Elite Flower plantation. SOUNDBITE: Alvaro Camacho, Manager Of Elite Flower, saying (Spanish) "Fifty percent of annual profit is generated on St. Valentine's Day. With a good exchange rate (dollars), we are hoping to have a very good year." Naturally, for these workers St. Valentine's Day is the busiest day of the year. The Colombian Association of Flower Exporters says that they will supply the world with 500 million stems. Not an easy task, but the romantic cause makes it worthwile, says employee Maria Lopez. SOUNDBITE: Employee, Maria Lopez, saying (Spanish) "I'm happy with my job, with all the time I've been here and happy that people abroad receive the flowers one sends with love and that they make other people happy." So if you receive flowers this coming Sunday, remember that they are truly, a labor of love.
