Dubai marks the new year with a spectacular light show at the world's tallest building.
Spectators take in an extravaganza of sound and fury to ring in the new year.
In Italy, the Pope visits the nativity scene in St. Peters Square after assuring the faithful that there is still good in the world.
In Myanmar, thousands attend the first public countdown of the new year.
Public gatherings were banned in the country for years -- this year they celebrate in the streets.
And in Kabul NATO troops take to the dance floor to mark 2013.

By the end of 2014 they hope to handover security to Afghan forces.
