A 16-year-old student is in a critical condition after a gunman opened fire with a shotgun at this school in California. Police say the shooter was a student at the Taft Union High School, and had reportedly had a disagreement with the victim. He fired a second shot before laying down the weapon. Sheriff Donny Youngblood praises staff members for reasoning with the gunman. SOUNDBITE: KERN COUNTY SHERIFF, DONNY YOUNGBLOOD, SAYING (English): "What we do know is, he was armed with a shotgun, he shot someone, he tried to shoot someone else, and the teacher is trying to escort, get the students to evacuate through the back door. During that process, the teacher and the campus supervisor engaged him in conversation, allowing all the students to get out and then he put the weapon down." The shooting comes less than four weeks since a deadly rampage at an elementary school in Connecticut.
