The announcement of Abu Muhammad al-Adnani's death in Syria came via Islamic State's Amaq news agency. He was one of the last living senior members that founded the group, which in 2014, stunned the Middle East by seizing huge tracts of Iraq and Syria. Adnani's main role? Directing attacks overseas -- including Europe. Islamic State's news agency did not say how Adnani was killed. A U.S. defense official says an air strike was carried out in the Syrian town of al-Bab Tuesday targeting Adnani, but declined to say whether the Islamic State leader was killed.
