Davos: Recession demands more competition

Jan 24 - Countries and businesses need to promote competition during recession to get the economy moving again, according to delegates meeting on the second day of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Countries need a medium and long-term plan to get the economic recovery underway, by focussing on areas such as education, innovation and tax, according to the OECD's Secretary-General Angel Gurria. Speaking on the second full day of sessions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Gurria said recession should make policy makers and competition commissioners encourage more competition, a view that is supported by the Vice President of the European Commission, Joaquin Almunia. Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt believes Europe needs more free trade agreements with emerging markets.
