Malala "feeling alright" after surgery

Feb 4 - 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai, a Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education, has undergone successful surgery at a British hospital. Deborah Gembara reports.

The Pakistani teenager shot by the Taliban is recovering after a five-hour surgery to rebuild her skull. SOUNDBITE: Malala Yousufzai, The Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban saying: "I'm feeling alright and I'm happy that the operations, both operations, were successful." A British medical team rebuilt 15-year-old Malala's skull with the help of titanium plates and then inserted chochlear implant which will restore her hearing on her life side --which was damaged in the attack. Doctors at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham say she is in stable condition and that they are very pleased with her progress. SOUNDBITE: University Hospital Birmingham Neurosurgeon Anwen White saying: "It does seem incredibly unjust that as a woman in Britain I can be a consultant neurosurgeon whereas a woman in Malala's situation would struggle to achieve the same job." Malala, an activists for girls education, was shot at close range by gunmen as she left school. The attack drew widespread condemnation and fueled an online campaign to nominate her for the Nobel Peace Prize. SOUNDBITE: Malala Yousufzai, The Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban saying: "It was that kind of success that now they've removed everything from me I can also walk a little bit, I can talk and I'm feeling better Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where Malala was transferred to, specializes in treating soldiers injured in combat.
