Final preparations were underway in Ecuador on Friday (February 15) as officials prepared for Sunday's (February 17) presidential election. As boxes of ballots were inventoried and distributed amid military security, international observers noted no irregularities. Soldiers guarded the boxes of ballots as they were transported and warehoused throughout the South American country. Incumbent President Rafael Correa has maintained a big lead over his closest opposition rival, former banker Guillermo Lasso. Polls predict the 49-year-old Guayaquil native will secure a third term after Ecuadoreans head to the polls on Sunday.
