Iran hopes for nuclear cooperation with Russia

July 2 - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hopes to build new nuclear power stations with Russian help. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomes Iran's outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the Kremlin Tuesday. Russia is looking for long term supply deals to export gas. 4. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "Russia and Iran are the major countries in the world, measuring by their natural gas stocks. No doubt we have mutual interests. Today we also have an opportunity to talk about our bilateral relations and to talk about the situation in the region." Iran is pressing ahead with its nuclear program, and is seeking Russia's help in building new nuclear power stations. 6. (SOUNDBITE) (Farsi) IRANIAN PRESIDENT MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD, SAYING (ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL TRANSLATION): "The nuclear power station in Bushehr has turned into a good symbol of the bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran. I think we can broaden our cooperation in this direction and build new power stations. The preliminary talks on this matter have already taken place and Your Excellency's directions are needed to finish the work and to put it into practice." Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. But the country faces a host of sanctions amid fears in the West that it is developing nuclear weapons.
