Bashar al Assad: "We will be victorious"

Aug. 1 - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declares ''we will be victorious'' as he visited troops in Daraya, the town security forces recently drove rebel fighters from. Deborah Gembara reports.

Inside a government stronghold in Deraa, rebels move into position and announce their arrival (Rebel firing RPG) The fighting wasn't limited to Southwestern Syria --- there were explosions in Aleppo and in Homs including an attack on a military weapons cache that sent a fireball into the sky, according to this latest video posted to a social media website. Reuters cannot indepedently confirm reports that rebels were behind the explosion which killed explosion killed 40 people and left 120 wounded. It was against this backdrop that President Bashar al Assad decided to visit Daraya --- a town once overrun by rebels and now firmly under military control. Assad's public appearances are increasingly rare and this one was clearly calculated to send a message. SOUNDBITE: Syrian President Bashar asl Assad saying: "From the time this conflict first started I've said we will be victorious. Martyrdom is a fate. But our goal is victory, and the entire country is waiting for the victory of the Syrian army." Assad's forces pounded Daraya after rebels moved in last year. The government's victory here, according to human rights activists, has come at the cost widespread destruction to the town and many civilian casualties.
