In December of 2012, a 23 year old woman was raped and tortured with an iron rod by six people on a moving bus in an incident that sparked national and international outrage. Thousands of people held marches and demonstrations to raise public awareness of the country's lax anti-rape laws. Changes to the laws have been implemented to reflect harsher punishments, but critics say penalties alone are not deterring sexual offenders. The teenager on trial, who was 17 at the time of the crime, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces a maximum of three years in juvenile detention despite police reports that he was the most brutal of all the suspects. The mother of the gang rape victim told reporters three years would not be a sufficient sentence. (SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) MOTHER OF THE DELHI GANGRAPE VICTIM, SAYING: "He should be given the death sentence, along with the other four accused and he should be kept in jail with them." Criminal proceedings against the other suspects are underway and are expected to end later this month.
