While people around the world celebrate the New Year with over-the-top festivities, Pope Francis had a more humble approach. He presided over Vespers in St. Peter's Basilica, calling on followers to reflect on the contributions they made to those in need. (SOUNDBITE) (Italian) POPE FRANCIS SAYING: "As the year 2013 comes to an end, we collect, as in a basket , the days , the weeks , the months that we have lived, to offer everything to the Lord. And let us ask courageously, how we lived the time that He has given us? Did we use it mainly for ourselves, for our interests, or we have been able to spend it for others? How much time have we reserved to be with God, in prayer, in silence, in adoration?" Those who could not make it inside the Basilica waited outside, hoping the Pope would pay them a visit. And he did not disappoint. After a moment of prayer near the nativity scene in St. Peter's Square, he took a moment to greet the excited crowd.
