ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said on Sunday (September 7) that American air strikes against Islamic militants threatening Iraq's Haditha Dam are "in line with the guiding principles of military action in Iraq". Hagel was meeting with his Georgian counterpart Irakli Alasania in Tbilisi, Georgia. "I think the strikes that the United States took are very much in line with what President Obama said were the guiding principles of military action in Iraq. First, the Iraqi government asked us for support in air strikes, second, it was the Iraqi security forces on the ground who conceived of the operation. They too, the Iraqi air force, is conducting strikes. Haditha Dam is a critically important facility for Iraq," Hagel said. The United States said it launched four air strikes against Islamic State militants threatening the Haditha Dam in western Iraq on Sunday, broadening its campaign against the fighters. It was Washington's first offensive into Iraq's western Anbar province since it started air strikes on Islamic State forces in the north of the country in August. Islamic State has overrun large areas of northern Iraq and declared a cross border Islamic caliphate, including territory it controls in neighboring Syria.
