"First smartship" makes maiden voyage

One of the world's most technically advanced cruise ships has set off on its maiden voyage from the UK. As Melanie Ralph reports Quantum of the Seas uses luggage tracking devices, robotic bartenders and apps which let the crew keep track of every passengers' needs.

A cruise ship with a difference. This super liner claims to be the most tech savvy on the market. Technology on board Quantum of the Seas is meant to give the customer power to design their own on board experience. Luggage is tracked, as is the customer with digital boarding. You don't even have to make friends with the barman - a robot will shake your cocktail at the Bionic bar. Royal Caribbean vice president Dominic Paul says the ship is a holiday game changer. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DOMINIC PAUL, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR INTERNATIONAL OF ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL, SAYING: "It is like something that has never been seen before on the sea, and I think that's why it's changing the face, not just of cruise ships, but of holidays. But if I only had an hour to spend now, I'd go straight upstairs and go to the skydiving machine and I'd sky dive at sea, because where else in the world can you sky dive in the middle of the ocean on board a cruise ship." If sky diving isn't enough of a thrill this glass capsule raises 300ft above sea level allowing you to see for miles around. It took five years of planning and building before the high tech voyager was ready to sail. Quantum of the Seas spans 18 decks and can carry over four thousand guests. Adam Goldstein, the President of Royal Caribbean says big ships are more economical than smaller ones and they tap into the needs of a wider audience (SOUNDBITE) (English) ADAM GOLDSTEIN, PRESIDENT AND COO ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL, SAYING: "We are able to compete globally, which the global dimension of cruising is really what's coming to the fore in this time frame, for example in China, and we find that Royal Caribbean International and our brands are very well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities." Some may miss the human interaction but technology can be found around every corner. Holiday-makers can book dinner, spa appointments and shore trips at the touch of a button. IT experts are on board to troubleshoot glitches. But there is a chance if the system goes down, with a robotic barman, you may not be able to even drown your sorrows.
