UVA student leaders disgusted by report of gang rape

University of Virginia student leaders express disgust after Rolling Stone magazine issues a detailed report of an alleged fraternity gang-rape involving seven men and a freshman woman. Gavino Garay reports.

Student leaders at the University of Virginia expressed their disgust after a Rolling Stone report of an alleged gang rape by seven men on an 18-year-old student at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity in 2012. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JALEN ROSS, PRESIDENT OF STUDENT COUNCIL, SAYING: "It makes me personally sick to my stomach to think about what happened that one night, in that specific fraternity house." (SOUNDBITE) (English) TOMMY REID, PRESIDENT INTER-FRATERNITY COUNCIL, SAYING: "Sexual assault is a problem that needs our undivided attention now. There are atrocities being perpetrated here that fly in the face of every principle we believe in." (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT OF ONE LESS AT UVA ,ASHLEY BROWN, SAYING: "This is our opportunity as individuals, as students, and as a community at large to rise up and say, 'Enough.''" Professors too, took to the streets to say it's time for rape culture to come to an end. UVA PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH, SUSAN FRAIMAN, SAYING: "We don't think concern is enough. Rape is a crime and people who commit the crime of rape to the fullest extent of the law." (SOUNDBITE) (English) UVA PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH, HERBERT TUCKER, SAYING: "The culture of rape is learned and I think that means it can be unlearned." The university has suspended all fraternities. "With one fraternity gone, or all of them gone, there's still going to be sexual assaults. There's still going to be parties where this is happening, if there's not that cultural change." (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED UVA RESIDENT SAYING: "The rape culture here does not just affect the women of UVA. It affects the women of this town at large." The University of Virginia is one of 88 schools being federally investigated for its handing of sexual assaults.
