Crowds of migrants gather in front of a reception center in Lampedusa after being rescued from the sea. The center is struggling to cope wiith the influx of people. Some are transferred to medical centers, but others just leave. This 20-year-old Somalian has traveled through the Saraha desert and survived the harrowing sea journey from Libya. (SOUNDBITE) (English) 20-YEAR-OLD SOMALI MIGRANT, SAYING: "The guy who was driving (the ship), the guy who was driving said, he said: 'Sorry, sorry, guys. We are going to die, all of us.' 'Why why?' we said. He said 'The boat has stopped working.' So what we can do? Even me, I can't swim, I can't swim." According to the United Nations, there were about 300,000 irregular crossings into the European Union last year, with more than half of those people entering via the Mediterranean. With political unrest on the rise in Africa and the Middle East officials say that number will go up this year as more and more people look to Europe for a better life.
