ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION). STORY: Rio de Janeiro┬┤s Christ the Redeemer Statue was lit up in pink on Sunday (March 8) to mark International Women's Day. People gathered in parks across the city's mountainous landscape to watch the tribute light up the autumnal nightfall in the South American country. The United Nations declared this year's theme for International Women's Day, "Empowering Women - Empowering Humanity: Picture It!" turning the focus to what still must be done towards achieving gender equality. For hotel housekeeper Aureliane Franco in Rio de Janeiro, the statue lit up in pink stood as an emblem emphasizing that very point. "People talk about equality, but sadly with salaries and position in society we're still not on the same level as men," Franco told Reuters as she gathered with her family to watch the statue turn pink. The principle objectives set out by the United Nations for 2015 are that each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination. The organization highlighted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments 20 years ago that sets the agenda for realizing women's rights.
