Yemen president berates Iran "puppets" at Arab summit opening

With his country embattled in conflict, Yemen President Hadi calls the Shi'ite group which has taken over large parts of the country Iranian ''puppets''. Nathan Frandino reports.

The crisis in Yemen follows its embattled president all the way to the Arab League summit in Egypt. There in front of leaders from allies like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Yemen President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi reinforces his support for Saudi military assistance. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) YEMENI PRESIDENT ABD-RABBU MANSOUR HADI, SAYING: "I call for the continuation of Operation Decisive Storm until this gang announces its surrender, exits all occupied territories in the provinces, and leaves state institutions and military camps." The Saudis started air strikes this week against the Shi'ite Houthi rebels, who are expanding their control into southern Yemen. The airport in Sanaa is among the latest targets. Officials there say they're trying to repair the runways, so they can facilitate the evacuation of U.N. staff. Back in Egypt, Hadi blames Iran for instigating the unrest. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) YEMENI PRESIDENT ABD-RABBU MANSOUR HADI, SAYING: "For this I tell the puppets of Iran and those with them, you are destroying Yemen with your adolescent trickery and the creation of internal and regional crises." Tehran denies involvement in the crisis and has condemned the air strikes.
