Islamist insurgents are calling it the "liberation" of Jisr Al-Shughour. For the first time in Syria's four-year conflict, an alliance of Islamist groups captured the strategic northwestern town from regime forces. The alliance incudes al-Qaeda's wing in Syria but not their rival, the Islamic State. The Islamist groups claimed victory after a deadly battle, Friday -- shown here in video obtained from social media. The fighters continued their assault, Saturday, with the aim of pushing the army from the few remaining government areas in Idlib. By taking Jisr Al-Shughour, the insurgents have edged closed to the coastal province of Latakia, president Bashar al-Assad's stronghold. They're now barely a ten minute drive from coastal villages loyal to Assad's government.
