ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Rap superstar Kanye West was honored with a doctorate degree by the School of Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) on Monday (May 11). "I felt my nerves a bit, and I don't feel that feeling a lot," said a visibly moved West. "The nerves of humility and modesty when being honored". West shared the stage with three other honorary-degree recipients: Chicago gallery owner Rhona Hoffman; Art Institute of Chicago President and Director Douglas Druick; and Janet Neiman of the LeRoy Neiman Foundation. Past SAIC honorary doctorates have gone to Patti Smith, Jeff Koons, David Sedaris and Chicago artist Theaster Gates. Dean of faculty Lisa Wainwright said she thought of honoring the pop star when she read that West, who had dropped out of college, had always wished he had attended SAIC. West studied painting for a short time at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, then English at Chicago State University, where his mother was chair of the English department. Kanye left college at the age of 20 years old with a reputation as a record producer already under his arm. His debut album was appropriately titled "The College Dropout."
