Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the Guatemalan capital to protest against the government on Saturday. The protests come in the wake of a scandal involving the former vice president, who resigned earlier this month over allegations she was involved in a customs corruption racket. Protesters held signs that read "out with the robbers" and talked about their determination. It's something extraordinary that the people protest in this way, said this retired teacher. The people today are saying "no more corruption!" Roxana Baldetti was linked to a ring accused of taking bribes to avoid levying customs taxes that was purportedly led by her personal secretary. Baldetti has denied any wrongdoing, but the scandal has hurt President Otto Perez's Patriot Party ahead of a presidential election this September.
