PLEASE NOTE: THIS PIECE CONTAINS GRAPHIC MATERIAL Bystanders desperately try to save Hisham Barakat, after his convoy was attacked with a car bomb. The bomb had been placed in a parked car, and was set off remotely as Barakat's convoy passed by. The blast shattered windows and set fire to half a dozen cars. The 64-year-old judge was rushed to hospital but doctors were unable to save him. Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab visited the hospital to personally pay his respects. Barakat was Egypt's top public prosecutor, and had enabled the detention of tens of thousands of government critics. He was the latest, and most senior, state official to die at the hands of militants.... ....since President Sisi toppled Islamist president Mursi two years ago, and began cracking down on the now banned Muslim Brotherhood. Militancy in Egypt has increased since Islamic State began calling on its followers to target judges. The attack raises fears that the world's most populous Arab country will once again be plunged into political turmoil.
