New Kiev police, trained by U.S. instructors, take an oath of allegiance to Ukraine, marking the first step of a sweeping police reform. In Kiev, 2,000 men and women in crisp navy uniforms prepare to be sworn in as police officers. They're pledging to bring a different attitude to the job, and to say no to bribes. President Petro Poroshenko as well as Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko were on hand for the ceremony --- which many believe is the most visible attempt to break with Ukraine's history of corruption. President Petro Poroshenko. (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT PETRO POROSHENKO SAYING: "Your mission is not only to fight against violations of law, but most of all to inspire in our people a hope for inevitability and irreversibility of our reforms, trust in the power of the Ukrainian state." Trained by U.S. and Canadian forces and equipped with new hybrid cars, the forces will first patrol the main cities, and then be deployed across the country. U.S. Ambassador To Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. AMBASSADOR TO UKRAINE, GEOFFREY PYATT, SAYING: "The police officers, who came here from America to share their experience and knowledge, do so as a part of the commitment from the people of the United States to support and stand by the people of Ukraine." Pyatt made no mention to the concerns about excessive violence and racism that have put U.S. police in the headlines in recent months. The new officers had praise for their trainers and say they're ready. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) POLICE OFFICER, VIKTORIA CHERVANCHUK, SAYING: "With each day in training, I started to realize, this is mine, that I can do this. Many people have had doubts -- saying you're a little girl, what are you going to do on the streets? But, we had good trainers and great preparation." New police officers were chosen from almost 17,000 candidates.
