Thousands of Singaporeans proudly wave their red and white flags as they...along with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong... ... celebrate their city state's 50th birthday. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SINGAPORE BUSINESS OWNER, ARTHUR TAY, SAYING: "It feels very exciting, we are all celebrating our pride, 50th national day and I (say) happy birthday to Singapore." Some 200,000 people attended the official festivities, which included a tribute to their first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, who died earlier this year. Singapore, an island of 5.5 million, gained its independence from Malaysia in 1965. Back then it was a post-colonial backwater. But today, it's a global business hub -- whose economic and social model is the envy of nations around the world. With Prime Minister Lee widely expected to call a national election as early as September... ...many political analysts say this patriotic display could help give his party a boost. And what better way to round out the celebrations than with some red and white fireworks?
