Kentucky clerk thanks supporters after her release from jail

Kim Davis, the Rowan County clerk who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, walks out of jail six days after a judge found her in contempt of court. Linda So reports.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis is a free woman. She fought back tears as she spoke to the crowd of supporters gathered at a rally outside the Carter County Detention Center. SOUNDBITE: KIM DAVIS, ROWAN COUNTY CLERK, SAYING: 15:46:23 "Thank you all so much, I love you all so much." Davis spent six days in jail after a district judge found her in contempt for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. In her first remarks since she was released, the Kentucky clerk stood by her beliefs and encouraged the crowd to do so as well. SOUNDBITE: KIM DAVIS, ROWAN COUNTY CLERK, SAYING: 15:46:56 "We serve a living God who knows exactly where each one of us is at. Just keep on pressing. Don't let down because he is here." That same judge ordered her release on Tuesday, saying he was satisfied licenses were being issued in accordance with the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage. Davis' attorney maintains the licenses issued during her absence are invalid. SOUNDBITE: MAT STAVER, ATTORNEY FOR KIM DAVIS, SAYING: 15:28:35 "Kim stood up for her beliefs and for the law. In Kentucky if you issue a license that is not authorized by statute, it is a criminal violation." Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee visited with Davis in a private meeting at the jail before speaking to the crowd. SOUNDBITE: REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE MIKE HUCKABEE, SAYING: 15:43:18 "I am not willing to spend one day under the tyranny of people who believe they can take our freedom and our conscience away." Davis' attorney says Kim plans to return to work soon.
