It's the Argentine pontiff's first official visit to the Caribbean island... ...and comes amid a recent rapproachment between Cuba and the U.S. -- one that he helped broker. During a news conference with Cuban President Raul Castro, the pope urged the former Cold War foes to deepen relations. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) POPE FRANCIS SAYING: "I urge political leaders to persevere on this path and to develop all its potentialities as a proof of the high service which they are called to carry out on behalf of the peace and well-being of their peoples, of all America, and as an example of reconciliation for the entire world." While Castro praised Pope Francis for his mediating efforts... He also criticized Washington over its economic embargo and occupation of the Guantanamo naval base on the island's eastern tip.
