When Kanye West announced that he was planning to run for US president in 2020 during a speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, many put it down as a publicity stunt. However, when asked by Vanity Fair if he intended to fulfill his promise, the rapper replied 'oh definitely.' He said that after the initial reaction people were positive about the idea, despite his reputation for angry outbursts. West has not said which political party he would represent but admitted he has 'a lot of research to do' and 'a lot of growing up to do.' He also said he is not intending to give up his music career if he became president, saying "It's fun to be a rock star, and I'll never not be one I guess, but there'll be a point where I become my mother's child." Kanye's late mother was a university English professor and and worked for civil rights organizations. Supporters of West have already launched a political action committee called Ready for Kanye in the hope he will run as a Republican. So far the group has under 100 followers on Facebook and Twitter.
