Some Afghan residents are fleeing Kunduz to escape heavy fighting they've seen these past few days. But President Ashraf Ghani speaks of good news for the people... after security forces recaptured the strategic northern city from the Taliban. (SOUNDBITE) (Dari) AFGHAN PRESIDENT, ASHRAF GHANI, SAYING: "We praise the security officials of our country for their tireless efforts leading the war from 10:00 p.m. last night until the early morning and during the rest of the day they managed to successfully launch operations. The good news is that we didn't have anyone martyred." But the defense ministry says militants suffered heavy losses. Taliban vehicles lie dismantled on the street. And residents say soldiers had removed the Taliban flag from the central square, replacing it with government colors. Even so, fighting continues in other parts of the city. President Ghani is calling for Afghans to stand with security forces and fight the enemy in all parts of the country. As for Kunduz, a Taliban spokesman says fighters had withdrawn to the edges of the city in an attempt to encircle Afghan and U.S. troops.
