NAT OF FLAG-RAISING There was a cheer when the Palestinian flag was raised for the first time at United Nations headquarters in New York. NAT OF CELEBRATIONS IN GAZA But much larger celebrations in Gaza and the West Bank, where the event was viewed as a major step forward for the Palestinian Territories. SOUNDBITE: GAZA RESIDENT HUDA ALIYAN, SAYING: "We wish to raise the Palestinian flag in all the international institutions, under the banner of the state of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital." The move was made possible earlier this month, when the UN General Assembly adopted a Palestinian-drafted resolution that permits observer states to fly their flags alongside those of full members. Palestine is only an observer -- not a member -- of the United Nations, a situation that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced, in a speech to the General Assembly. SOUNDBITE: ABBAS, SAYING: "Palestine, which is an observer state in the United Nations, deserves full recognition and full membership." Abbas also accused Israel of sabotaging U.S. efforts to broker peace, and warned that Israeli security operations at the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem could lead to a religious war. Israeli-Palestinian strife has risen sharply in recent weeks as Arab states and Palestinians have accused Israeli forces of violations at al-Aqsa mosque, one of Islam's holiest places.
