Isolated North Korea marked the 70th anniversary of its ruling Workers' Party in Pyongyang on Saturday with a massive military parade. Thousands of military personnel in perfectly aligned formations goose-stepped and saluted Leader Kim Jong Un who oversaw the event. During a speech strikingly more forceful than previous public comments, Kim said North Korea was ready to fight any war waged by the United States. (SOUNDBITE) (Korean) NORTH KOREAN LEADER KIM JONG UN SAYING: "Iron spirit and united forces of our army and people that enabled us to break through the imparilists' sanctions and isolation, are forcing the enemies in extreme anxiety and fear. The party's revolutionary armament means we are ready to fight any kind of war waged by the U.S. imperialists." A U.S. military official said earlier in the week that Washington believed North Korea has the capability to launch a nuclear weapon against the U.S. mainland and that the U.S. was ready to defend itself against any such attacks. Kim was joined by a senior Chinese official who relayed a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping for stronger ties between the countries. China is North Korea's chief ally and its main trading partner, although ties have been strained over the North's nuclear program.
