Government forces in Syria are advancing in their campaign to retake territory from insurgents around the northern city of Aleppo. That's according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and this video shown on Syrian Television. The Syrian forces are backed by Hezbollah and Iranian fighters ... in a campaign that was launched on Friday. It's one of several assaults the army has waged against rebel fighters since Sept. 30 ... when Russian jets began a series of air strikes in support of President Bashar al-Assad. The campaign for Syria's second city has concentrated so far on clearing rebel areas south of Aleppo... rather than in the city itself, which is home to two million people and divided between government forces and rebels. But Aleppo is hardly the only front-line. The army and its allies are also fighting to retake other parts of the country .... including the northern provinces of Hama, Idlib and Latakia , also seized by rebels in recent months. ... as well as areas around the capital Damascus, and in the southern province of Deraa near the Jordanian border.
