ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan had an orchid hybrid named after them on Saturday (November 7) during their visit to Singapore. Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong greeted the pair alongside his wife Ho Ching at the Singapore Botanic Gardens before sitting down for lunch. Singapore often names orchid species in honour of various diplomatic figures during their visits to the island-state. This particular species is now known as Papilionanda Xi Jinping-Peng Liyuan. Xi's visit to Singapore marks 25 years of formal diplomatic relations between the countries. It was Xi's first visit to the island-state as president. The meeting came shortly after both leaders held bilateral talks and oversaw the signing of several memorandums of understanding to broaden cooperation on issues including trade and education, local media reported. After the naming ceremony, Xi went on to a luxury hotel in Singapore to sit down to talks with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, the first such meeting between the political rivals since China's civil war ended in 1949. No agreements were expected in what was seen as a highly symbolic get-together in Singapore, a largely ethnic Chinese city-state that has maintained good ties with both for decades.
