ROUGH CUT (No reporter narration) STORY: Senior politicians in India are urging opposition parties not to disrupt the functioning of the house, following a chaotic session in the upper house of parliament triggered by the Congress party's repeated blocking of proceedings. Congress party has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of political vendetta against Congress party president Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul, over a court case. The two sides - both in Rajya Sabha, or upper house of the parliament and Lok Sabha - were at loggerheads on Wednesday (December 9) two days after a judge ordered Sonia and her son Rahul, Congress party vice-president, to appear in court in a case brought by a prominent member of Modi's BJP. A senior Congress leader, Anand Sharma, rejected the government's proposal to discuss the issues in the parliament. Sharma asked BJP to act against their three chief ministers - Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Raman Singh and Vasundhara Raje Scindia - embroiled in controversies. The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty ruled India for most of its post-independence era after 1947 and helped shape the country's institutions. Detractors, including Modi, accuse the family of holding back economic development with socialist policies. The case, brought by BJP member Subramanian Swamy, alleges the Gandhis used $13.5 million of party funds to pay debts accrued by a newspaper business. The Gandhis deny wrongdoing. Disruptions in Rajya Sabha are a blow to Modi's hopes of passing a crucial goods and services tax (GST) reform.
