The Oscars. A lovely glitzy affair showing Hollywood at its best. Unfortunately though this year all we're talking about is diversity. You see all the stars nominated in the major acting categories - are white. So who's to blame? According one industy insider - it's not the academy's fault. (SOUNDBITE) Executive Features Editor, The Hollywood Reporter, Stephen Galloway, saying (English): "The Academy is 'the' establishment, it's the most visible representation of the film business, but it is not the film business. The studios, the financiers, the distribution machines, that is the film business and they're making the decisions about which movies are actually made. You have to go to the root of the problem and the root of the problem is that the studios are simply not greenlighting films that are led by minority performers to a sufficient degree that it actually reflects this country and its make-up and that has to change." Gil Robertson - President and co-founder of the African American Film Critics Association also agrees: (SOUNDBITE) President/Co-founder of the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), Gil Robertson, saying (English): "It's a definite problem. You can walk across the campuses of all the studios and never really see anyone of color and it's something that the industry needs to correct. Film is a reflection of the world that we live in but when you walk across a studio lot, you don't see a reflection of the world, you don't see those people." (SOUNDBITE) Executive Features Editor, The Hollywood Reporter, Stephen Galloway, saying (English): "Time and again, there's been proof that this conventional wisdom in Hollywood is wrong, that conventional wisdom being that black films don't travel. Yes they do." Sounds like there is some work to be done. For now let's enjoy a bit a Star Wars - a film that has got it's diversity ducks in line.
