ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Republican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz told a gathering of supporters in Iowa on Saturday (January 30) that they have a heavy responsibility as the first state in the nation to choose a presidential candidate. Cruz and billionaire businessman Donald Trump are locked in a tight Republican race in Iowa, which holds the first-in-the-nation nominating contest on Monday (February 1). Both Trump and Cruz have worked hard to pick up support from Christian conservatives. At a speech in Ames, Iowa, Cruz urged them to weigh each candidate carefully at Monday's meetings. "Take seriously your responsibility in politics, first in the nation," he said. "The responsibility that you bear on your shoulders to look at the candidate, to vet us. Not to listen to what we say, but to look to our actions as the Scriptures say, 'you shall know them by their fruits.'" But Cruz has picked up a powerful enemy-Iowa's Republican Governor Terry Branstad told voters earlier this month it would be a "big mistake" for voters to choose Cruz for the Republican, citing the U.S. senator's opposition to a biofuel mandate important to the state. Ethanol is a major market for Iowa corn, and the state's voters have generally supported ethanol mandates.
