Hillary's watershed 2008 moment remembered

The tears that launched a thousand votes; Hillary's 2008 emotional campaign stop in New Hampshire is remembered by the woman who prompted it. Julie Noce reports.

Cafe Espresso in New Hampshire is an historic landmark for Hillary Clinton. The year was 2008, and she had just lost the Iowa caucus to Barack Obama. She was speaking to group of women, one of them was Marianne Pernold. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARIANNE PERNOLD (PRONOUNCE MAH-REE-AHN PARE-NOLED), NEW HAMPSHIRE VOTER WHOSE QUESTION BROUGHT HILLARY CLINTON CLOSE TO TEARS IN 2008, SAYING: "After about two hours of political expected questions, about health care, the economy, and the standard answers, I said, I'm going to ask her something personal." It was a watershed moment for Hillary Clinton... she replied in a softer than normal voice. Her answer to the question 'why do you do it?' wasn't typical Hillary. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, HILLARY CLINTON, SAYING: "This is very personal for me. It's not just political, it's not just public. I see what's happening. We have to reverse it. and some people think elections are a game, they think it's who's up and who's down. It's about our country, it's about our kids' futures. It's really about all of us together. Some of us put ourselves out there and do this against some pretty difficult odds. And we do it -- each one of us -- because we care about our country. But some of us are right and some of us are wrong, some of us are ready and some of us are not, some of know what we will do on day one and some of us haven't really though that through enough." Some people say Hillary's emotional response helped her win the New Hampshire primary which was held the very next day. Marianne says... (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARIANNE PERNOLD (PRONOUNCE MAH-REE-AHN PARE-NOLED), NEW HAMPSHIRE VOTER WHOSE QUESTION BROUGHT HILLARY CLINTON CLOSE TO TEARS IN 2008, SAYING: "And then she started to feel that she was tearing up. She was not crying. She was kind of...And I feel that she didn't know what to make of that..." Now four years later, Hillary finds herself in another uphill battle for New Hampshire as she trails Bernie Sanders by double digits. Win or lose, Marianne says Hillary's efforts are admirable. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MARIANNE PERNOLD (PRONOUNCE MAH-REE-AHN PARE-NOLED), NEW HAMPSHIRE VOTER WHOSE QUESTION BROUGHT HILLARY CLINTON CLOSE TO TEARS IN 2008, SAYING: "To me, she is like Sisyphus always pushing that 2016 election up that hill while she's dragging all of her baggage and all of her controversy behind her.... (cover w broll) I couldn't do what she's doing. I don't have anything to lose by not doing it. Maybe she does." Marianne says she's still undecided. In 2008 she voted for Barack Obama.
