ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Peruvian Nobel prize-winning author Mario Vargas Llosa said on Tuesday (March 1) that Donald Trump was a "clown" and a "racist" who would doom the Republican party to defeat if it chose him as its candidate for November's U.S. presidential election. "He is a danger to the United States," said Vargas Llosa, who himself ran as a centre-right candidate for the Peruvian presidency in 1990. "The United States is a country that is too important for the rest of the world to have in the White House a clown, a demagogue and a racist like Mr Trump," he told a news conference in Madrid to launch his new novel, "Cinco esquinas" ("Five Corners"). "I don't think he will make it to the White House, I don't think he will even be the Republican candidate. I think the Republican leadership is clear the party would be discredited (if Trump were the candidate)," he said. He sees Trump as a menace. "No country, not even a country like the United States with such a deep democratic tradition, is free of populism. Populist demagogy reaches large numbers of people by exploiting their fears, insecurities and prejudice, and that is Trump's case," Vargas Llosa said. Vargas Llosa, 79, won the Nobel Literature Prize in 2010 and now lives mainly in Madrid.
