Five years after the civil war in Syria began, a new wave of protests reminiscent of those during the Arab Spring, which resulted in a government crackdown by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. From the Idlib province to Homs, once a city besieged by government forces, protesters are renewing their demand that the Assad regime "withdraw." Assad's Syria today marks the start of a new era after six months of air strikes by Russian forces. It remains to be seen if this newest round of protests will spiral into another government crackdown like it did in 2011... or if Syria might possibly open a new chapter.
