It was business as usual for Syrian president Bashar al Assad… captured here by State TV in Damascus, laying the first stone of a housing project. He spoke of building in the face of destruction and how Damascus could serve as a model for other cities. Western diplomats say his confidence is well founded. Thanks to support by Russia over the past six months, Assad's forces have won back control in their war against rebel groups. He has this man to thanks for it. Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow's six month bombing campaign has enabled Assad to reassert his authority …and create a climate for peace.. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT, VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING: "Today they are able not only to curb terrorists but maintain successful offensives against them." While Russia has since withdrawn its forces, peace is also being discussed by Western Powers in Geneva… many of whom want Assad removed from power and charged with war crimes. If they get their way, Assad's days inspecting new housing projects may soon be over.
