ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Bangladeshis celebrated the 45th anniversary of their country's independence on Saturday (March 26) with a lavishly colorful ceremony at the Dhaka National Stadium. Hundreds of people, including school children and members of the police force, took part in the event which showcased national dress and intricate dance routines. The country's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stood in the stadium and watched the performance. Bangladesh separated from Pakistan in 1971 following a nine month war of independence during which Bangladesh official records say around three million people died at the hands of the Pakistani army and local collaborators. Before independence Bangladesh was known as East Pakistan. As part of the independence commemorations, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President Abdul Hamid and thousands of Bangladeshis also paid their respects to the martyrs of the Bangladesh Liberation War by placing flowers at the national memorial.
